American individualism is the idea that Americans tend to put themselves over the community. This western idea often leaves out marginalized groups for the sacrifice of self comfort. This has forced some Americans to gain large pots of wealth while the majority of Americans struggle to keep afloat.
In regards to the COVID-19 pandemic, some american individualists don't use a mask for their own comfort and risk infecting civilians and essential workers. When you compare our differences in respect and selfishness to east asian countries like Japan, there is really one difference, and that is culture. In East asia, groups hold the importance of community over self. Whether you see this as a good or bad thing, during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has harmed Americans into being the country with the largest number of cases.
In East Asian culture differences are celebrated and used to create a working group or community. This creates a harmony within the community in which everyone cares for one another without losing their individual self. Even before the Corona virus struck, east asians often wore masks in public. Why is this you may ask? Well, it is fueled by the thought that your elders and group are important and must be protected. Western ideals favor ourselves rather than those around us. Several videos of grown Americans have gone viral for simply showing their arrogance and ignorance for not wearing protective masks in public as if we are not in a worldwide Pandemic. As of today, 153,913 Americans have died from the Corona Virus. Many of which could’ve been prevented if Americans took into account the importance of human lives. People could have been still alive if it weren’t for a surge of ignorance in America. This is not only harmful but a reflection on how western ideals of individualism have failed us and our selfishness
