By Caroline Green For this edition of the column, I will be discussing Mauro Martinez. He is a San Antonio artist well-versed in many different styles and is represented by Unit London. He is definitely one of my favorites because of his creativity and individuality in his work- you definitely know him when you see him. Many of his paintings are “cursed images,” as he enjoys painting popular memes and unusual photos. However, he is most known for his spoof paintings of Instagrams censorship filters, such as sensitive content or false information. In these he usually creates some sort of graphic image in spray paint, mostly nudity, and adds the text on top.
The spray paint gives it the blur effect to not fully reveal the image, but allows you to distinguish what is being portrayed. In addition to this, he has done less popular abstract, reclaimed, and distorted portrait paintings. Personally, I enjoy his reclaimed framework because he takes gorgeous wood frames and adds his own flair to them, which overall stands out to me.
