Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the legacy she left:
Ruth Bader Ginsburg served as a judge in the American Supreme Court for 20 years before her recent passing at the age of 87. Many Americans were heartbroken to hear the news of her passing as not only was she one of 2 women ever elected into the Supreme Court, she was also a pioneer for equal rights particularly for the LGBTQ+ community and women’s rights. It was thanks to her continuous fights that many minority rights are protected today.
RBG has always been a passionate and driven woman. In the early 1950s she graduated top of her class in university despite raising a young daughter and caring for her husband suffering from testicular cancer. After education she also struggled to further her career against the gender discrimination setting her back. In fact before she was elected into the Supreme Court in 1993 she was actually a director of the Women’s Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union in which she presented six huge cases on gender equality to the Supreme Court.
Throughout her career she has protected women’s rights for things like abortion or joining the army, pushed for the protection of Obamacare and played a huge role in the legalisation of gay marriage. While off the bench she also had a strong political opinion and is quoted to have called President Trump a “faker” during his presidential run in 2016 and is also acclaimed as an important supporter of the recent #MeToo movement. Later when asked about her legacy she said “To make life a little better for people less fortunate than you, that’s what I think a meaningful life is. One lives not just for oneself but for one’s community.”
I think we can all agree that in this sense she has accomplished this as in her passing she has left not only left behind key turning points towards equal rights. Her influence will now be commemorated in history to inspire young people to continue the change and work toward a better future.
